WiNKY is a genre-bending short film about the balance of power between the genders. It’s a unique story that challenges notions of gender-based violence and subverts expectations.

A South African woman develops a bizarre super power after she is sexually assaulted.

Gender Based Violence (GBV) is classified by the South African government as a “national crisis”, a “second pandemic” and even a “phenomenon”. Help us tell a story draws attention to the issue through creativity.

MOODBOARD

Hi, I’m Kelly. I’m a South African writer, filmmaker and creative director and I’m excited to tell you about WiNKY.

I can’t recall the exact moment the idea for this script came into my head, but it was probably one one of those days where I was watching gender-based violence play out on my Netflix carousel, in my WhatsApp chats, my Instagram feed, news headlines, dinner conversations… Just like every other day! I remember thinking to myself: “Imagine what it would be like for woman to feel untouchable?” And hey presto – the script was born.

The film follows the story of Violet, a South African woman who develops a bizarre superpower after she’s sexually assaulted. It will feel like an antidote to GBV, like a punching bag for women everywhere. Yes, it’s going to be scary, it’s going to be dark, but it will also be funny, provocative and empowering. It will make you ask SURREAL questions like “Imagine if a woman never felt scared?” and “Imagine a man that couldn’t cause harm?”. So please donate, follow us, share this site, and help us make WiNKY.

Your donation will play a critical role in bringing WiNKY to life. We need support for all stages of production. All proceeds from the film will be donated to the Saartjie Baartman Centre.
